FCA Box Lacrosse is Rochester’s longest-standing box lacrosse program and has played an important role in the development of our athletes for years.

This winter, every FCA Upstate field team will train in the box throughout the winter season. The fast pace, tight spaces, physicality, and decision-making of the box game will help our players become tougher, smarter, and more skilled overall lacrosse players.

Players will also have opportunities to sign up for box tournaments throughout the winter, giving those who want additional competition the chance to represent FCA in tournament play.

Our goal is to use the box game to develop players who are better prepared when they return to the field in the spring and summer.

WE WILL BE FOCUSING ON BUILDING SKILLS IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS:

FUNDAMENTALS:

  1. Loose ball-pick up (picking up a loose ball against boards -vs- field)
  2. Ball Handling
  3. Passing/Catching (passes require better positioning/accuracy and quicker reaction time)
  4. Shooting (limited targets with 4×4 net with a big goalie demand precise shots)
  5. Proper checking and check receiving
  6. Checking on the boards (USBOXLA rules)
  7. Moving with and without the ball

TEAM CONCEPTS:

  • Defensive positioning and system controlling your opponent
  • Offensive positioning and system breaking down the defense
  • Faceoff/Faceoff positioning and tasks
  • Optimum goal position
  • On ball V Cuts, Picks, Pick and rolls
  • Off ball V Cuts, Picks, Pick and rolls
  • Fast Break Offense
  • Power play/penalty

"HAVING PLAYED IN BOTH THE MLL & NLL, I UNDERSTAND THE VAST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE FIELD AND BOX LACROSSE. WE WANTED TO CREATE AN OPPORTUNITY WHERE PLAYERS FROM CANADA AND NEW YORK COULD COME TOGETHER AND EXPERIENCE TRUE BOX LACROSSE. WE WANTED COACHES THAT CONSIDERED THEMSELVES BOX LACROSSE COACHES THAT HAD A TRACK RECORD OF SUCCESS AS BOX PLAYERS AND COACHES. WE ARE THANKFUL TO HAVE COACHES THAT HAVE HAD A LONG HISTORY OF COACHING BOX LACROSSE LEADING OUR BOYS, TEACHING THE FUNDAMENTALS, SKILLS AND NUANCES OF BOX LACROSSE."
